Durch eine Gruppe interner und externer Experten erfolgt dann, auf Basis der verschiedenen theoretischen Ablaufdefinitionen fur ein Projekt, im ersten Schritt eine genaue Definition des Problems sowie dessen Ursprungs. Basierend auf diesen Erkenntnissen werden dann im zweiten Schritt Losungsmoglichkeiten abgeleitet, welche schliesslich im dritten Schritt umgesetzt werden. Oftmals muss dann aber festgestellt werden, dass die eingeleiteten Losungsschritte nicht den gewunschten Erfolg mit sich bringen bzw. neue Probleme entstanden sind. Die Folge daraus ist, dass ein Anschlussprojekt ins Leben gerufen wird, welches dann erneut nach der eben beschriebenen Schematik bearbeitet wird. Grundlegende Anderungen werden so oftmals blockiert und Chancen auf nachhaltige Veranderungen vergeben. Action Learning hat diese Problematik erkannt und versucht dieser mit einem alternativen Vorgehensmodell entgegen zu wirken. Der Fokus dieses Verfahrens liegt dabei auf dem Lernprozess an sich, welcher im normalen Projektalltag sonst kaum Beachtung findet. Im Gegensatz zum typischen Schullernen, welches Wissen auf Vorrat ansammelt, kommt im Action Learning das Praxislernen als Kernelement hinzu. Action Learning basiert auf der Uberzeugung, dass Mitarbeiter einer Organisation am besten anhand einer realen Herausforderung lernen. Umso verwunderlicher ist es, dass trotz dieses grossen Erfahrungszeitraums, welche zahlreiche fehlerhafte Durchfuhrungen zum Vorschein brachte, immer noch eine so grosse Anzahl von Misserfolgen zu finden sind. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde diese Thematik von vielen Seiten beleuchtet und zahlreiche Handlungsempfehlungen fur die richtige Umsetzung des Fusionsprozesses entstanden. Eine vielfach in Erscheinung tretende Problematik stellt dabei eine erhohte Fluktuation in Folge des Fusionsprozesses dar. Der damit verbundene Verlust von Know-How sowie der entstehende Mehraufwand fur das Recruiting und Anlernen neuer Fachkrafte stellen die Unternehmen vor grosse Probleme, welche sich dann oftmals negativ auf die Wettbewerbsfahigkeit auswirken und die Fusionen scheitern lassen. Die Folgen fur die deutsche Wirtschaft waren verheerend und die Arbeitslosenzahl wurde in Deutschland von aktuell 3,156 Millionen (stand Februar 2013, Anm. d. A.) um ca. 225.000 auf knapp 3,4 Millionen Arbeitssuchende anwachsen. Besonders hart durfte dieses Szenario aber die Stadt Wolfsburg treffen, welche bekanntlich als Arbeitersiedlung des dort erbauten Volkswagen-Werkes entstanden ist. Rund ein Drittel der 122.000 Einwohner der Stadt Wolfsburg sind heute in der dort direkt beim VW-Konzerns angestellt und schatzungsweise ein weiteres Drittel ist indirekt damit verbunden (Dienstleister, Zulieferer u.a.). Die Folgen fur die Stadt, welche sich aus einer plotzlichen Arbeitslosigkeit eines Drittels Ihrer Einwohner ergeben wurden, sind kaum auszumalen. Die Einwohner von Marienthal mussten im Jahre 1929 leider aber genau diese Erfahrung machen. Innerhalb kurzester Zeit verloren ca. 1300 von ca. 1500 Einwohnern ihren Job. Im Gegensatz zum heutigen globalen Zeitalter, in welchem die Arbeit des Unternehmens aus New York in Munchen erledigt werden kann und ein beruflicher Umzug in eine andere Stadt alltaglich praktiziert wird, befanden sich die Marienthaler damals in einer ausweglosen Situation. Aufgrund der Weltwirtschaftskrise war auch im weiteren Umkreis keinerlei Arbeit zu finden. Die psychischen und sozialen Auswirkungen auf die betroffenen Menschen und das Leben in ihrem Dorf sind noch heute kaum vorstellbar und waren zu der damaligen Zeit in keinster Weise nachzuvollziehen. Darum entschloss sich eine osterreichische Forschungsgruppe eben diese durch eine Studie zu erforschen.
